MHS Construction Update October 2023

We are excited to share monthly construction updates during this school year. Things are changing quickly at the Moorhead High School construction site and we want to document the progress. We will be on-site throughout the project to provide updates.

Watch a video walkthrough, or check out the highlights below. Click here for past updates.

This month, we’ll be touring a few of the building’s uniquely designed special education-supported rooms located on the first floors of two of the academic wings.

Toward the entrance of the wing, a recessed area in the hallway (1) is designed for students’ exercise equipment. Next, you’ll find a collaboration space (2) for transition courses offered through the special education department. This area will feature a kitchenette, a seating area, breakout rooms for small meetings, student work spaces and teacher work spaces—similar to teacher collaboration spaces in other areas of the new building.

The collaborative kitchenette space (3) is unique to the special education wing, and will feature a kitchen and a tile floor where students will be able to design, prepare and enjoy their meals as part of their transition programming opportunities. The surrounding area also includes an attached bathroom. Classrooms (4) in this area feature a connecting storage area in the back and many of the features you would see in other classrooms throughout the academic wings.

Each special education wing will feature multiple one-person bathrooms (5), some of which also include a shower. Near the far end of these areas, you will find sensory rooms (6) with comfortable seating, a low-stimulation environment and soothing color-changing lights—including in attached quiet rooms (7)—to give the students calming environments when necessary. These sensory rooms are the result of positive collaboration between our partners at Zerr Berg Architects and the district’s Special Services Department’s teachers and staff to design inclusive spaces that meet the individualized sensory needs of students at MHS .

At the end of the wing, the design of the building not only helps students enjoy the natural light and beauty of nature, but provides indoor and a protected outdoor area to wait for the bus (8) after school.

Thank you for joining us for this month’s update, stay tuned to our website and social channels to see more progress as we near the conclusion of Phase I.
