Horizon Middle School  2023-24 Highlights

With the 2023-24 school year now behind us, we have some time to look back at some Horizon Middle School highlights!

Horizon West PowWow, Mr. Dooher Hosts Read Aloud for Award -Winning Book, Sixth Grade Math Masters

1. Horizon West PowWow

At the end  of the school year, Horizon West students had the honor of participating in the prestigious Woodlands and High Plains Powwow, hosted at North Dakota State University (NDSU). Under the guidance and support of Indian Education Liaison Delores Gabbard, these students not only attended but actively engaged in the cultural festivities by performing traditional dances. This event provided a unique opportunity for the students to immerse themselves in and celebrate the rich heritage of Indigenous cultures, fostering a deeper connection to their roots and enhancing their cultural understanding.  

2. Mr. Dooher Hosts Read-Aloud for Award-Winning Book

Throughout April, every Tuesday and Thursday, Horizon Middle School West students eagerly gathered in the media center for an engaging read-along session led by media specialist Daniel Dooher. The selected book for this literary journey was "The Eyes and the Impossible" by Dave Eggers, the distinguished recipient of the 2024 John Newbery Medal. These sessions provided a wonderful opportunity for students to delve into the captivating narrative of Eggers' acclaimed work, fostering a love for reading and enriching their literary experience.  

3. Sixth Grade Math Masters

On April 12, the 6th-grade Math Masters from Horizon Middle School West showcased their exceptional mathematical skills at the Regional Tournament. The team achieved a remarkable victory by securing 1st place in the highly competitive team category. Additionally, students Kendal Cronen and Nikita Tran delivered outstanding individual performances, earning first place in the fact drill competition. Their remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed; in recognition of their hard work and success, they were honored with prestigious "We Are Proud" awards during a school board meeting in May. This recognition highlighted not only their individual talents but also the dedication and teamwork that contributed to their impressive accomplishments.

4. Horizon Band Honors

Horizon Middle School had the honor of hosting the Northwest Region of the Minnesota Band Directors Association (MBDA) festival. This event, organized by the MBDA, brought together young musical talents from across the region. The festival featured performances by Horizon Middle School's first and second-year band students, who showcased their developing skills and passion for music. Hosting such a significant event underscored Horizon Middle School's commitment to fostering musical excellence and provided an invaluable platform for these budding musicians to perform and grow in a supportive and encouraging environment.


5. 150th Anniversary Celebration Cross Stitch Art


Horizon Middle School West's 6th graders, under the expert guidance of art teachers Samm Saarion and Trudy Stubson, embarked on an enriching outdoor cross-stitching project funded by a Legacy Organization Grant. This initiative offered students a unique opportunity to hone their artistic skills while gaining a profound appreciation for cultural heritage. The culminated in the creation of an impressive 16-foot by 12-foot cross-stitched Spuddy mascot, inspired by the renowned Spanish artist Raquel Rodrigo. This stunning piece of artwork now proudly adorns the Horizon Middle School West main entrance, serving as a testament to the students' creativity and hard work.The unveiling of the cross-stitched Spuddy was a memorable event, taking place during Track and Field Night on May 9.


6. Horizon Theatre Production Happy Days


 "Goodbye gray skies, hello blue!" This spring semester, the Horizon Middle School Theatre Department brought the spirit of the 1950s to life with their delightful production of "Happy Days - A New Musical." The talented cast delivered four captivating performances at the Performing Arts Center at Horizon Middle School, enchanting audiences with their lively renditions and infectious energy. Each show was a resounding success, showcasing the hard work and dedication of the students both on stage and behind the scenes. The production not only highlighted the students' theatrical talents but also created an unforgettable experience for the entire school community, filled with nostalgia, laughter, and the timeless charm of the beloved TV series
