Brian Cole and Superintendent Lunak

Brian Cole, orchestra teacher at Horizon Middle School was surprised as the first Spud Spirit winner for the 2022-23 school year.

Do you know a deserving individual? Nominate them by Friday, Sept. 23.

Cole was nominated for this award by a parent of one his students from last school year. His nominator described him as so much more than the best orchestra teacher in the state of MN (and beyond). He is a leader who cares about each and every student.

His talent to bring together ALL students is impressive and appreciated. Athletes…… arts students…… musically gifted…… and everyone in between, he creates a fun learning environment where students are engaged, encouraged, and are given opportunities to perform, excel and learn.

His nominator specifically highlighted a story that showcases the important work he does outside of teaching valuable content. She said …

“The parent of one of Mr. Cole’s students was battling cancer. It came back with a vengeance and she was hospitalized right before her son’s birthday. Mr. Cole checked in regularly with the student and on his birthday organized a special day for him knowing his mom was in the hospital. When she passed away shortly after, Mr. Cole took time with students for what was happening in life. Not school lessons, but life.”

Cole is a passionate, awesome human being who is SO much more than the orchestra teacher. He is funny and supportive. He gets things done and cares deeply about every kid. His nominator said that he not only exceeds in the classroom, but he also goes above and beyond outside of it as well.
