Robert Asp Elementary

Asp Families,

Happy Sunday! What a glorious weekend it has been, at least from a weather standpoint. It looks like this week won’t be as warm, but still not bad. We shouldn’t need snow pants so if they aren’t home yet, remind your kids to bring them home! Some additional notes for the week:

  • MCA Testing: Testing starts this week for our 3rd and 4th grade students, and teachers in those grades have shared their schedules. And while we always want students to get great nights of sleep (9+ hours, no screens before bed, etc), healthy breakfasts, and be on time, it’s especially important this week for students in those grades. Tests don’t define students, but they are a good measuring stick in comparison to the rest of the state.

  • Cell Phones: As a reminder, students do NOT need cell phones at school. They can be used before/after school, but NOT during the school day. Students who bring a phone should either keep it in their locker or give it to their teacher. If students have them out during the school day for any reason, like at lunch, recess, or even just at their lockers, we’ll ask them for it, and then give it to their teacher to hold onto it for the remainder of the day. If it becomes a repeated problem, we’ll hold onto it until you, the parent, comes in to get it. Please call the office or email your child’s teacher if after school plans change, rather than texting your child and expecting a response during the school day.

  • Other Items From Home: Similar to above, students really don’t need to bring any toys, fidgets or other items from home. Regular school supplies are all that’s needed in backpacks. We encourage students to leave those items at home, and appreciate the help from you!

  • Did You Know? We have new soccer nets for student use at Asp purchased by our very own Robert Asp PTAC! Through fundraising events like the school carnival and the walk-a-thon, PTAC is able to use those funds to support our students and staff. But to keep this going, we’re going to need more parents to get involved. PTAC board member terms are up in May, so without new members it’ll be tough to keep things going. Consider getting involved, thanks!

  • Tornado Drill: This Friday we’ll conduct our mandatory tornado drill. We do this every spring around Severe Weather Awareness Week to practice in case of an actual tornado. We have a couple of fire drills to complete this spring as well and will be scheduling them around the weather.

  • STEM Night: Next week on Tuesday, April 23, from 6:00-7:30 pm we’ll have our annual STEM Night Family Event at Asp. We’ll share more information next week, but wanted it on your radar!

  • Keys To Kindergarten: This week on Thursday, April 18, from 6:00-7:30 pm we have our annual Keys to Kindergarten event for incoming kindergarten students and their parents. A few of our K teachers will be here, along with some other staff, to showcase what kindergarten is like and what you can expect next fall. Students and parents will have a chance to experience a kindergarten classroom, hear from the principals and support staff, and even turn in necessary paperwork. Register here if interested!

  • 4th Grade Family Note: You are invited to Horizon West on the evening of April 16th for a family information night. Please click this link (updated and working this week!) for more information for this event. If you have not completed your 5th grade music registration for your student, please complete that now by clicking here. To learn more about Choir, Orchestra, Band and Exploratory Music classes, please check out this link. Please reach out to Horizon administration or music teachers with any questions. They would like all students to be registered before the end of the school year!
