Moorhead Area Public Schools is proud to congratulate the Moorhead High School Boys Hockey team on winning the Minnesota State High School League Class AA Championship at the Xcel Energy Center on March 8, 2025.
The top-seeded Spuds opened the tournament with a 7-4 come-from-behind win over #8 Lakeville South before claiming a last-minute 4-3 victory over the defending state champs, #5 Edina. Moorhead charged to an early lead in the championship game, then fended off a furious comeback by #2 Stillwater to lock down a wild 7-6 win and secure the program’s first state title.

Mr. Hockey - Mason Kraft
Kraft became just the second Spud to capture the prestigious Mr. Hockey award, presented annually to the outstanding senior high school boys hockey player in Minnesota, following Brian Lee in 2005. Lee went on to become the #9 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft and played seven years in the NHL for the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning.
The history-making Spuds were welcomed home with an escort from the Moorhead Fire Department and a rally at the MHS gym with a crowd of over 1,000 cheering fans. At the rally, Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson declared the week of March 9-15 to be Spud Hockey Week in celebration of the team’s accomplishment.
