During the week of September 24-30, Moorhead Area Public Schools celebrated a very special milestone: Homecoming Week during the 150th year of Moorhead schools.
To start the week, seniors Ron Addo and Mya Follingstad were named Homecoming King and Queen; Ron is on the Wrestling and Football teams while Mya is involved in Orchestra, Apollo Strings, PaY and Tennis.
Other members of the homecoming court were Grace Bathurst, Heidi Becker, Cece Bedore, Heidi Dahl, Ella Holm, Kate Kosobud, Maren Rygg, Taliah Triggs, Ava Wanner, Jace Blythe, Leif Carlson, Joel Egerdahl, Jake Erdmann, Parker Gast, Tate Linn, Jacob Rossland, DJ Smith and Dylan Zimmerman.
Starting Monday, every school in the district participated in Spirit Week—where each school designated different themes for students and staff to dress up to show their Spud spirit. Themes at various schools included Pajama Day, Sports Jersey Day, Rainbow Day, Ken and Barbie Day and Spud Day.
Spuds of all ages were also able to get souvenirs to celebrate the district’s 150th anniversary, including special Spuddy tumblers at the Downtown Moorhead Dairy Queen and brand new 150th Anniversary merchandise from Spuddy’s Store. While the tumblers sold out, the merchandise remains available online through October via the Spuddy’s Store web portal.
Highlights on the court and on the field for the Spuds during Homecoming Week included the Boys Soccer team going 1-1-1, Girls Swimming defeating Dickinson (ND) 103-79, Volleyball posting a flawless 3-0 record and Football cruising past St. Cloud Tech 48-13.
On Saturday, close to 1,000 alumni and community members took a walk down memory lane at the MHS Farewell Event. A self-guided tour with a dozen points of interest showed the history of the current building as the district prepares for the opening of Phase I of the new MHS in January.
Homecoming Week wrapped up with the induction of six new members into the MHS Hall of Honor. The induction ceremony is an annual event to recognize outstanding Spud alumni, staff and community members for their accomplishments. This year, alumni Douglas Eckheart, Doug Hamilton, Scott Hornbacher, Greg Siekaniec and Arlan Stangeland and former staff member Russ Henegar received the distinction.
Photos of many of the Homecoming events are available on the district social media channels, as well as the Twitter accounts of the individual schools.
