A Message from Our School Counselor

Our Monthly Theme:  RESPECT (insert Aretha Franklin’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T)

We are focusing on the grandfather teaching of respect this month.

Respect means to have a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something based on their abilities, qualities, or achievements.

In our classroom counseling lessons we are talking about how important it is to recognize, respect and honor others.  We can do this by:

  1. Recognizing when someone is feeling uncomfortable by looking at their face, body and things happening around them.

  2. Asking them questions to better understand how they are feeling.  When we understand how they are feeling, we can empathize with them and know how to help them in better ways.

  3. Showing them kindness by giving them what they need.

This is a WIN-WIN.  They win because they get help with what they need and we win because it feels good to help others. This is what we do to show respect.

Another very important conversation we had in a fourth grade class was how important it is to treat ALL people with respect, regardless of how people look on the outside. We never know what someone else may be going through so it’s super important to treat people respectfully.

We are extending our understanding of respect by learning about how a staff member's family has had to overcome many obstacles as they pulled together to fight cancer as a family.  Stay tuned for more about Brave the Shave and how we can Make CHANGE for CHANGE.
