A Message from Our School Counselor

Our Monthly Theme: FINISHING STRONG

WE MADE IT to May but we’re not done yet!

In classrooms this month, we are reviewing all of the lessons we have been working on that will help us be the best versions of ourselves in school, at home and throughout our lives!  Continuing to practice these skills will help us finish strong.

Our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons are taught throughout the year by teachers and me. Students learn two lessons each month.  One lesson is taught by their teacher and one lesson is taught by me, their school counselor.

The lessons are divided up into four units.

  1. Growth Mindset and Goal Setting

  2. Emotional Management

  3. Empathy and Kindness

  4. Problem Solving

During the months of Nov., Dec. and Jan.,  students learned about how important it is to manage feelings/emotions. The key lessons from this unit included:

2. Emotional Management

  • All feelings are okay and are NOT final, feelings change.

  • We can learn and practice ways to CALM DOWN big feelings by…Taking deep breaths counting to 5 when inhaling and exhaling/Counting similar colored items around us/Counting to 10-50-100-1,000/Walking to a calming corner or getting away from/changing your scenery/environment/Using positive self talk, “I can do hard things. I am safe. I am okay. This will be over soon.”
