Happy New Year 2023!
Our January Theme: Honesty
We are featuring HONEST students this month and a few themes have surfaced. One issue students are having is how to be friends with multiple people even when some of those people don’t get along with others. Sometimes it’s difficult to know what to share and what to keep to yourself. One of the tools we use at school which could be easily adapted and supported at home is the THINK model.
Before you speak: THINK
T-Is it TRUE? Did YOU actually see someone or hear someone say something from their mouth to your ears with no messengers in between? Some things we want to share may be true but does what we want to say pass the test with the rest of these questions? It’s never too early to start teaching our children that everything we hear or read is NOT true.
H-Is it HELPFUL? Is what you want to say helpful or hurtful?
I-Is it INSPIRING? Does what you want to say inspire someone to do good or put them down?
N-Is it NECESSARY? Some things we hear may be true but not necessary for others to hear. For example, it’s really none of our business what others even think of us. Don’t be a messenger. If someone wants something said, they should say it, you don’t need to speak for someone else.
K-Is it KIND? If what we want to say is true, helpful, necessary or even inspiring but it’s not kind, maybe there is someone else, like a trusted adult, who can help instead of saying something unkind to someone else.
